Official Metal Gear Solid Anime Series Is Not What You Think

Metal Gear Solid currently boasts an authorized anime, but it’s not what you might anticipate.

Distant from a lavish animated adaptation of the Metal Gear Solid series, an authorized YouTube series from Konami named Mini Gear instead takes the characters and storylines of the highly acclaimed “tactical espionage action” franchise and reimagines them. In this instance, that implies reducing characters like Solid Snake and Colonel Roy Campbell into nearly chibi-like form for amusement.

In the initial episode of what Konami is classifying as a series, Snake is somewhat fed up with the entire “one-man infiltration mission” concept, jesting that the series should be renamed to “Manic Gear,” since he would have to be “insane” to persist with such perilous missions. He also remarks that Campbell emits some intense “betray me later” vibes, a remark that fans of the series will find amusing.

Despite Snake insisting that he has no desire to embark on any more stealthy adventures, a few glimpses of a dubious substance swiftly change his mind. He promptly becomes thrilled about visiting Shadow Moses island and feels compelled to “sneak around” and “conceal himself in cardboard boxes,” which is music to Campbell’s ears.

The series exists to promote Konami’s upcoming Metal Gear Solid: The Master Collection Vol. 1, scheduled for release on October 24. The collection combines Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3, along with Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, into a single package for contemporary consoles. Konami is also working on a comprehensive remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, although no release date for the project has been disclosed.

Meanwhile, updates regarding a legitimate Metal Gear Solid film adaptation from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts have largely gone quiet. Oscar Isaac, who committed to portraying Solid Snake, stated last year that the Metal Gear Solid movie was still in progress, and remained optimistic that the project would materialize. He mentioned that the creative minds behind the film were “searching like Solid Snake” to discover the right narrative before production could commence.
